I have read and heard about the the Blue Whale suicide game from a few people. I have also seen memos issued by schools flying around on WhatsApp, warning parents about the deadly “game.” I did not know the magnitude of the alarm until after I did a Google search of the so-called game. The outcome was chilling, to say the least.
What is the Blue Whale suicide game?
The Blue Whale suicide game is believed to be an online social media game which is encouraging people to kill themselves. According to Wikipedia, “the game is based in the relationship between the challengers (also called players or participants) and the administrators. It involves a series of duties given by the administrators that players must complete, usually one per day, some of which involve self-mutilation. Some tasks can be given in advance, while others can be passed on by the administrators on the day, the last task being suicide.”
Wikipedia further adds that “the game was created by Philipp Budeikin, a former Psychology student who was expelled from his university. Budeikin stated that his purpose was to “clean” the society by pushing to suicide those he deemed as having no value.”
Online searches reveal that many deaths have been recorded already. Some may never be known and reported. Checks revealed that there are hundreds of thousands of posts relating to the chilling trend on Instagram. I saw many too on Twitter.
In a particular case, as reported by the The Sun (UK Edition), the mother of a 14 year old boy, whom the mother believed could have been a victim of the deadly game, said “I knew that game existed, but I never imagined that he would be able to do something like this. When we were told about this game, we told him to take care because this game was very dangerous.”
Metro News have it that in Russia, two schoolgirls, aged 15 and 16, fell to their deaths from a 14-storey block of flats. Another, aged 15, fell from a fifth floor flat, while a 14-year-old girl died after being hit by a train earlier this year. One of the girls, Yulia Konstantinova, 15, left a note on social media saying ‘end’ shortly after posting a picture with a blue whale; while her friend Veronika Volkova, 16, wrote ‘Sense is lost… End.’ before she took her own life.
